Permit Test

Safeway Driving School is officially licensed to administer the Class "D" Knowledge Test (Permit Test).

The Knowledge Test consists of 40 multiple-choice or true/false questions typically taken on a computer. The student must answer 32 questions correctly to pass. You will be responsible to bring your student to one of the exam centers to take the test. We provide information in the Parent Letter and on the last day of class which includes all of the testing requirements and exam center locations.

  • Be at least 15 years old

  • Have completed 30 hours of classroom instruction.

  • Electronic Classroom Completion Certificate (e-Card) submitted to Department of Public Safety by Safeway Driving School

  • Bring a primary and secondary form of identification

    • Primary Forms: Certified birth certificate or valid passport

    • Secondary Forms: school issued ID card or original Social Security Card

How to schedule your Permit Test

Only students that are enrolled in a Safeway Driving School program can schedule their permit test at a Safeway Driving School location.

You can conveniently schedule your Permit Test from your Student account or click the “Schedule A Permit Test” button below to schedule your Permit test at our Main Office in Roseville.

Next Steps:

  • Pass the Knowledge Test
  • At a DVS location
    • Bring a primary and secondary form of identification
      • Primary Forms: Certified birth certificate or valid passport
      • Secondary Forms: school issued ID card or original Social Security Card
    • Pass a Vision Test
    • Have their ID Photo taken
    • Pay the fee for the Instruction Permit: $29.50; valid for 2 years, renewable
    • Have a parent or guardian available to sign the application

Students will be given a temporary permit that is a valid Instruction Permit until their hard-card photo permit comes in the mail. The temporary permit is valid for 120 days. If the hard-card photo permit is not received within 120 days, it is your responsibility to call the Minnesota Department of Public Safety at the phone number shown on the temporary permit.

The Instruction Permit allows the student to practice driving with a licensed driver who is age 21 or older. The student must have the Instruction Permit with them at all times while driving. The student is required to hold the Instruction Permit for a minimum of six months before attempting their Road Test. The Instruction Permit is valid for two years and is renewable.
