Classroom Expectations

At Safeway, we know students have busy schedules—that’s why our program is designed to be flexible, while still meeting all state requirements.

Late Arrivals / Early Departures:

To meet Minnesota Department of Public Safety requirements, students:

  • Must arrive on time—a late arrival means you won’t be admitted.
  • Cannot leave early—the full 3 hours is required for credit.

If you can’t stay for a full class, it is best to miss the entire session and make it up at a different time.

Missing a Lesson:

No problem! Our 30-hour course is made up of 10 non-sequential lessons, which means students can take them in any order. If you miss a class, simply log into your Safeway student account to schedule a make-up. We recommend taking Lesson #10 last, since it reviews all previous lessons.

Multiple Classes Per Day:

State law limits students to one class (3 hours) per day, so unfortunately, you can’t double up to finish faster.

What We Expect From Students

We want every student to feel safe, respected, and ready to learn. These expectations help create a positive and productive classroom experience for everyone.

Respect the Instructor

  • Be on time and return promptly from breaks.
  • Listen during lessons, participate in discussions, and complete all activities.
  • Keep electronics (including cell phones) off and put away during class.

Respect Your Classmates

  • Contribute to a positive learning environment with a mature attitude.
  • No disruptive behavior, inappropriate language, or symbols—this includes clothing and materials.

Respect the Property

  • Treat school and classroom property with care.
  • Vandalism, writing on desks, or damaging walls or chairs will not be tolerated.
  • No smoking or vaping.
  • Students will be removed permanently for shoplifting or damaging nearby property.

Consequences

If a student is asked to leave a class for any reason, they will need to make up the entire lesson on another day. Repeated violations of our classroom expectations may result in removal from the program.

What We Expect From Parents

At Safeway, we value parents as essential partners in their teen’s driver education journey. Here’s how you can help support a successful classroom experience:

Ensure Timely Attendance

  • Please help your student arrive on time for every class.
  • Late arrivals or early departures are not allowed under Minnesota state law. Students must attend the full 3-hour session to receive credit.

Support Completion of All 10 Lessons

  • If your student needs to miss a class, encourage them to log into their Safeway account to schedule a make-up. All 10 lessons must be completed to earn a Certificate of Completion.

Minimize Distractions

  • Please make sure your student has a quiet, distraction-free space if taking a virtual class.
  • Cell phones and other electronics must remain off during class time.

Encourage Respectful Behavior

  • Reinforce the importance of being respectful toward instructors, classmates, and school property.
  • We reserve the right to remove any student from the program for repeated disruptions or serious behavior violations.
